So vehement was his excoriation of the lives of his rebel “parishioners” and of the teachings and doctrines of the Roman church that after his first sermon his hearers declared: “Others snipped at the branches of popery; but he strikes at the roots, to destroy the whole.” Now the Protestant rebels against an ecclesiastical government awaited help from England. But French ships arrived instead. French troops captured the castle and its defenders, and Knox began 19 months as a French galley slave, under flogging and cursing learning to be an apostle of liberty to his people.

But Pentecost was the greatest of Christ’s works as well because it was the beginning of great preaching, and the birth of the first great church in Jerusalem. Think about Peter’s sermon in this light, because the way Peter preached is the way Christian preachers should preach today, and what Christians should expect from preaching. Peter preached Christ, Divine purpose, and Gospel blessing, three themes which should permeate all Christian preaching throughout the ages.

TO, Dear brother greetings from pastor.A.ravibabu,from India. In 1998, we started the first church out of nothing. My wife and I preached the gospel in the streets. Some people got saved through the street preaching. We invited them to come to my house. About 12 people came to my house on the 10th, December, 1998. With those 12 people, we started the mother church in my house itself. Then, we started the branch churches also. Now, we are going as a team from my church, preaching the gospel and planting our branch churches. In 1999, when we reached 7 churches, God gave me vision to plant churches in all over India. By the grace of God, so far we have planted11churches. We encourage each Pastor to plant at least 10 churches in his life time. In this way, we are going to reach our country India for Christ. Thrice a week, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, we go as a team and preach the gospel street by street in our city itself. We give invitation for prayer and salvation. We distribute gospel tracts and gospel portions. When people come forward, we pray for them, take their addresses and visit their houses. Twice a month, we go to the interior villages by bicycle and preach the gospel. We distribute the gospel tracts and the gospel portions. We go again and again to the same villages regularly and then we plant the churches. Every Sunday evening, we go to the hospitals as a team, visit the sick and pray for them. We distribute the gospel tracts and gospel portions to the people. We meet their financial needs and also help them like writing letters and so on. Welsh’s sermons are of that ‘torrential’ kind that sweep all before them. The following specimen drawn from the pages of James Young’s biography(4) may serve to illustrate the sort of denounciation of royal encroachment with which the walls of St Giles must have rung in that December sermon. The passage is taken from a condemnation of selfishness in those landowners who preferred to pocket funds intended to support the gospel ministry: ‘A great many of you . . . are the cause of the everlasting damnation of a great part of the people, for want of the preaching of the Word of Salvation unto them . . . Vouchsafe so much upon every kirk as may sustain a pastor to break the bread of life unto them, and think of the damnation of so many millions of souls of your poor brethren who might have been saved, for ought that ye know, if they had had the gospel preached unto them . . .’ No hyper-Calvinism this!
